Cribs & Kids {Giveaway Ended}

crib&kidsWhen I was shopping for the baby’s nursery, trying to find quality furniture that was affordable was painful. When it arrived, the instructions were confusing and translated incorrectly. The assembly part was frustrating to my engineer husband, who finally had to design a couple of wood pieces to make it all work.

I wish I had a resource like Cribs & Kids, who recently opened at The Vineyard Shopping Center in San Antonio.

As the largest baby showroom in the city, Cribs & Kids is the brain child of Courtney Santillano and her husband.

What I loved about Cribs & Kids was how they designed mini-rooms to showcase the more than 30 sets of furniture they sell.  Plus each mini-showcase gives you wonderful decorating ideas for a nursery.   They sell furniture from Baby’s Dream, Munire, Young America, Nursery Classics and Dutailier.

Courtney has wisely chosen furniture that is sturdy and built to grow with a child. The Young American brand caught my eye. My boys loved the bunk bed that was featured, and I really like the dresser that matched it, and it’s large array of drawers. I really felt like this is a nice durable set that could withstand two rowdy boys.

Crib & Kids is also a full design center to assist you in creating your dream nursery or children’s room. Their staff can help you create a space for your child that is a balance between style, character and functionality.

Of course they have more in their store besides cribs, changing tables and dressers — they also have an array of cute baby gifts, strollers, mattresses, diaper bags, and more.

I fell in love with the owl baby hat.

The Best Buy Geek Squad, Zones and Solution Central (Giveaway 2 of 5 CLOSED)

The Geek Squad off to save someone’s day.

One of the things Moms and Dads should place on their nesting list while preparing for baby is to make sure your computer, cameras and/or video cameras are running correctly and ready to go. It would be a shame to get into the labor room only to discover that the batteries or dead, or something within the device is broken.

If you need some technical help, be sure to look up the Geek Squad at Best Buy. From my observation they seem superior than the Nerd Herd we all watched on NBC’s Chuck. I think they take their job just a little bit more seriously. A little humor, of course.

When I was touring the New Best Buy store layout this week, their new zoning system was explained to me. Now I’m not sure I have this all correct, but I’m going to give it a whirl:

The Geek Squad has been combined with the “Inbound Counter” that you and I would call Customer Service. Just beyond the Customer Service counter is a series of orange Geek Squad booths where you can sit down with a consultant agent WITH your device (computer, DVD Player, TV, etc) so you can show your Geek Squad agent exactly what problem you are experiencing.

If your device is broken it goes immediately goes to an advanced repair agent behind the Geek Squad booths.  (I just love that they call all their employees agents — reminds me of Chuck again).

I snuck around the corner to spy on the Advanced Repair Agents.

So in this area of the store you have Zones 1-4:

Zone 1: Customer Service Agent
Zone 2: Operations Agent (handles administrative paperwork)
Zone 3: Consultation Agent
Zone 4: Advanced Repair Agent
Zone 5 is Auto Tech where they install car stereos, and this zone reports to the Geek Squad

During the holidays, the Customer Service area will be able to flex their counter between service and holiday questions, depending on the demand inside the store — meaning agents in each of these zones will move back and forth between zones as needed.

General Manager George Cunningham ringing out some customers with a blue shirt agent.

There are up to 12 Geek Squad agents in the store I visited. A few of them hang out in Zone 6 — Solution Central. General Manager George Cunningham considers this one of the coolest changes in their strategy.

As explained in Wedensday’s post about the store being a Connected Digital Store 2.0 (CDS 2.0), the Solution Central is the central core of CDS 2.0. The large square counter is smack-dab in the middle of the store. Here you’ll find white shirt agents and blue shirt agents.

The white shirt agents are Techology Education Agents. The blue shirt agents are basically the sales side, however the store would like to have more ring-outs done by the blue shirts at Solution Central. Why, you ask?  It’s so the Blue Shirt Agents can connect you immediately to the Technology Education Agent (TEA). The TEA will then sit down and run through your new device with you, so you’ll know how to operate it once you walk out of Best Buy’s door. It’s all about education.  It makes us a smarter consumer in the long run.

The TEA’s have gone through advanced training. Best Buy has committed to spend 40 percent more on training their agents through hands-on training, computer based training and classroom style training.

However here is the best part about Solution Central: if you buy a device from a competitor (Wal-mart, Amazon, etc.) — a TEA will sit down with you for 15 minutes (FOR FREE) to educate you about your new device.  All you need to do is schedule an appointment. To me, this really shows how much Best Buy cares about their customers.

A Technical Education Agent giving a client a tutorial.

However Best Buy doesn’t only care about their in store clients. They also kind of dig The Bloom Blog readers by giving me five gift cards to give away this week.  This post is for Gift Card #2. If you missed the first one, click here to see if that giveaway is still open for you to enter.

My (New) Best Buy Experience {Giveaway 1 of 5 CLOSED}

Best Buy General Manager George Cunningham

Best Buy General Manager George Cunningham

Walking into our local Best Buy store to witness first hand their new layout — I was immediately greeted by the General Manager George Cunningham. I spent about 10-15 minutes of his precious time having him tell me about the changes at Best Buy and what I could expect to find in the store.

Why was his time precious? Because he spends about one to one and a half days training every new employee. That adds up over the year — and is part of Best Buy’s improved and enhanced employee induction class: the General Managers are now responsible for training versus line staff.

The first thing that struck me (besides thinking the outer entrance had an overhaul) was the super functional store layout. When you first enter, there are a couple of entry aisles that sweep you right into the middle of the store to their Solutions Center (more on that later). The aisles fan out from the middle of the store to the outer walls. It’s as if the whole store has been feng shui’d, making the customer feel invited to come into the store and start wandering around all their different departments.

Best Buy Signage

And speaking about different departments — just from standing at the entrance you can look around the whole store and see exactly where you need to go thanks on their signage package. The blue sign towards the ceiling squares off the center of the store and you can tell where everything is located.

So far there are four stores in San Antonio (and perhaps more in other markets) that have all gone through the Best Buy’s Connected Digital Store 2.0 (CDS 2.0) remodel. Part of the CDS 2.0 remodel includes:

  • An expanded Geek Squad precinct, which can help make understanding your gadgets easier
  • Eye-level displays creating more opportunities to play with and discover the technology you love
  • Digital registers located throughout the store to streamline the check-out process so you can get in and out faster than ever
  • New in-store digital displays that update as often as our products do so you can be in-the-know with the latest information on all your favorite brands

Some other changes in a CDS 2.0 store include separating an online purchaser from customer Service. This is a smart, smart move on Best Buy’s behalf. Who wants to stand inline for 5-10 minutes listening to a customer’s issue while you’re excited to pick up that new iPad you just ordered from home?

The online purchases has been moved to the Outbound Checkout side of the store and have their own counter.  Along the wall is also some hidden storage shelving to stash items that are waiting to be picked up by the new owners. This makes the whole experience super fast — you don’t have to wait for your checkout person to go digging for it back in the warehouse.

Best Buy Checkout

Online purchases checkout has been moved from the customer service side of the store to checkout.

The store I visited looked larger than before — however the reality is they lost retail footage to accommodate the warehouse. That hasn’t stopped them from stocking the store to the hilt with everything a digital home might need. I was impressed with their inventory of TVs, computers, stereos, refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, movies, DVDs. A vast improvement over what was in stock just a few months ago when I was needing an accessory for my iPad.

To learn more about the Best Buy experience, be sure to visit their website here.

Best of all, Best Buy is providing The Bloom Blog five gift certificates to give away to five of our lucky readers! Be sure to check back for more posts about my New Best Buy experience that will include must haves for Christmas, their new Solutions Center, and expectant Dad and Best Buy Sales Agent Jared — who shared with me his must have camera for when baby arrives. You’re going to be surprised with his outside the box thinking. It’s just genius.

Melissa & Doug Terrific Twenty List and Giveaway (Closed)

One thing I look for in toys for my Sunbeam and Firecracker is quality and durability. Already at the ages of four and two, they can be rough with their toys.  That’s why I like the Melissa & Doug brand.  The quality of their toys stand out above the rest — both physically and creatively.

That combined with the emphasis of our children needing creative play in their schedule every day, makes the Melissa and Doug brand a must have for my boys.

Just this past week Melissa & Doug announced their “Terrific Twenty” list! This list compiles the “best of the best” holiday gifts for the 2012 holiday season, and I’m excited to share it here with you!

To celebrate, Melissa and Doug is having a 20 Days of Terrific Twenty” Giveaway on their Facebook page! Every day they’ll be giving away one item from their Terrific Twenty list to at least one of their lucky Facebook fans!

But wait…Melissa and Doug has offered to give away the Magic Mine Train Tunnel to one of my readers! Trains + tunnels are a magic combination with my boys who will find ways to create new tunnels for the trains to go through. This would make an excellent Christmas gift for any child, grandchild or friend.

Melissa & Doug wooden train sets feature solid-wood tracks, brightly colored trains and lots of exciting themed railway sets. In the future you can add loading docks, roundhouses, train tunnels and bridges that swivel and lift. Or combine sets to add even more creative possibilities to your little engineer’s train play! All rail pieces and trains are compatible with popular wooden train sets, and is recommended for ages 3 and up.
