Red 40 Dye: Is it Effecting Your Child?

Synthetic dyes, such as Yellow 5 and Red 40, don't belong in foods, especially those consumed by children.I came across a discussion today on Facebook that really caught my attention. A friend on mine posted a link to Food Inc. and then the discussion below it was about Halloween candy and Red 40 Dye. You see my friend has an autistic child and she is very aware of what food items she puts in his body. I don’t have any children with autism so I pretty much go with the flow. I certainly encourage my children to eat healthy and make healthy choices. We cook a lot in our home with very fresh ingredients so I am not overly concerned. But since we have a giant bag of candy in our house from trick or treating and it is flu season so I have been passing out spoonfuls of cough medicine like it was candy this dye issue is starting to bother me. I am posting the conversation here so you can see what these mothers are going through.

Holly, I’m so glad there is someone else looking at this – I don’t believe in the FDA anymore! My son has had kidney damage (long story) but b/c of this I’ve done a lot of research about foods & the dyes that are put into them – dyes: yellow, blue, orange & red 40 they are finding correlations to ADD & ADHD, autism & kidney damage (especially red 40… when you start looking at the ingredients dyes are in everything! I’m also reading Jillian michaels book “master ur metabolism” & she talks about food, chemicals, etc that affect our hormones! Absolutely scary! I grow most of our veggies & have cut out all processed foods!

Way to go Emily!!! So savvy and cool! I’m very sorry to hear about your son’s kidney damage and that it could have been prevented. You are so wise to grow your own food and to be shunning foods made in a chemical plant. Why these “foods” (we’ll call them that for sake of conversation) are allowed to be sold is beyond me.

p.s. Holly…….My kids don’t eat candy normally but I allowed my youngest to eat a little last night. He asked me which ones he could eat from his bag and I said, “nothing that is blue or green!” lol! He ate some “white” nerds and a couple of tootsie rolls then I snuck in a few mini-bags of Annie’s fruit chews which he THINKS are candy. …  ha ha! He was perfectly satisfied and convinced that he had eaten CANDY!

My oldest (with autism) cannot talk so I always say, “when he can ask me for candy then I’ll give it to him”. Until that time, candy is not our target goal word!

I hid the candy and am going to go through it in a bit to get the heavily dyed stuff out. I will tell you both that there is NO doubt that Andrew is affected by Red 40. No doubt. It makes a HUGE difference in his hyperactivity.

Oh, and unfortunately Andrew knows how to say he wants candy all too well! He won’t tell me most things, but “I want candy” is a favorite. :(

That’s funny!! Candy isn’t in our house either but I’ll go through it & it mysteriously disappears- lol! Another interesting tad bit on red 40- it is the worst of the dyes, yet when u have a kidney infection ur told to drink cranberry juice & what does cranberry juice have? Red dye 40!

Why does medicine need to be colored if it’s flavored? If it tastes good, kids will take it. Why does it have to be red, orange, yellow or purple? And why does medicine for adults need to colored? Why does Sudafed for adults have to be red? I usually wipe the color off medicine tabs with a damp paper towel – comes right off.

I thought that conversation was too important not to share. It has really opened my eyes. I hope it inspires you to read more labels and ask more questions.  Here are some other good articles about Red 40 Dye. Please read it and tell me what you think.

Vaccinations: A Guide for the Perplexed

syringe

Despite statistical predictions of how a majority will react to a vaccination, it's impossible to accurately predict how any individual will respond.

I like this article. I like it because it makes sense. I can relate to all of her examples – such as the effects of coffee and alchol from one person to another!! There is no finger pointing or I told you so…just some interesting facts and more reason why we should know more about what we are putting in our bodies and in our children’s bodies.

Prince Lionheart Bamboo Cloth Wipes and Wipes Warmer

On Wednesday we got the new Prince Lionheart Warmies Wipes Warmer and the Warmies Reusable Bamboo Cloth Wipes in the store! I am so excited to try out my new stuff! I opened up the package of wipes and loved how soft they were. Yes, they are bamboo and yes I know that bamboo is soft but it surprises me everytime I feel it how

soft it actually is. It is luxurious!! The Warmies cloth wipes come in a package of 8. (The Warmies Wipes Warmer also has 4 warmies included as well as an Ever-Fresh pillow to keep the wipes moist, bonus!!). I love that the wipes have a recipe book included so that you can make your own wipes solution, I am not so crafty and need all the help and guidance I can get! I made the All-Purpose Wipes Solution. I would have like to have made the Essential Oils Wipes solution or the Soothing Baby Wipes solution but I don’t keep essential oils around the house and didn’t feel like going to the store and spending a fortune!! The All-Purpse Wipes solution called for olive oil, water and all-natural baby wash (I used Mustela Dermo-Cleansing infant hair and body wash, because we sell it at the store, it smells GREAT and I have plenty of it in my house!) So, I soaked my wipes in a big bowl, squeezed out the extra solution and rolled them up and placed them in my new Prince Lionheart Warmies Wipes Warmer. Several hours later they were nice and toasty. Finally, a dirty diaper. Time to put the wipes to the test. OMG I love these wipes. The solution I made smells so good and one wipe cleaned up the whole mess. Then I just threw it in the with

my cloth diaper and they all went into the wet bag together. No sorting dirty disposable wipes from the dirty cloth diaper. I’ve gone the flushable wipes way but just wasn’t very satisfied with the experience.

I give the Prince Lionheart Bamboo Cloth Wipes and Wipes Warmer a hearty thumbs up! Just one more way I am reducing my footprint. Get yours at Bloom!

Chuck the Yuck!

Morning sickness sucks. Motion sickness sucks. But what really sucks is when you have to throw up say in your car or on a plane or out in public!! Some people I know have children that get sick just driving around town in the car. This particular mom keeps a lovely bowl or maybe it was a jar in the back seat for junior to get sick in. Yuck. But, I have been there before. One weekend we were headed to West Texas, just a mere 7 hour car drive and my oldest daughter woke up sick. We got her in the car and handed her several 13 gallon trash bags. That is all we had. Ridiculously large, not very convenient and super wasteful. Thankfully my daughter only threw up 2 times and then she was ok. Sure wish we knew about Chuck the Yuck!

Fun Finds from ABC Kids Expo

We love ABC Kids Expo for so many reasons! It’s VEGAS, it is a weekend without the kids, oh and least I forget there is a really great kid’s expo. The Las Vegas Convention Center is chuck full of really cool kids products. This year we found tons of new stuff and as it arrives in the store we will be featuring it on the blog and on the website!

Miss Dodie and her flip flop Jazzy Toes socks!

Miss Dodie and her flip flop Jazzy Toes socks!

Ok, so Jazzy Toes aren’t a new product but they are new to Bloom and man are they the cutest things ever!!! We are all familiar with Trumpette socks. Adorable little socks that look like mary jane shoes, etc…my problem with Trumpette socks is that they are sooo darn small! I took home a box of Jazzy Toes and immediately put them on my 10 month old and they fit! Whoo hoo. They have a lot more stretch than the Trumpette socks and the designs are hilarious. My personal favorite is the flip flop! Check out my daughter wearing the socks, they look real. Oh, and we have the Hampton Variety Set for Boys too and I just love the Teva sock. This makes a great gift! The price is right and every baby needs socks no matter what time of year they are born. Get your Jazzy Toes Hampton Variety Pack at Bloom!

I Survived My First Week of Cloth Diapering!

Ok, so I have been spouting since my baby was born (10 months ago) about how I wanted to cloth diaper. I even gave it a brief try with prefolds, but struggled. Every time I threw out a disposable diaper I had a twinge of regret knowing that nasty dirty diaper was going to be sitting around this earth for such a long time. But good grief, aren’t disposable diapers convenient? I try to be green. We recycle at home. We even compost. So I really wanted to give cloth diapering a go.

How cute am I in my hot pink PUL with black microfiber!

How cute am I in my hot pink PUL with black microfiber!

I tried to think what was the main reason holding me back. It was information. I didn’t know what in the world I was doing. So we held a class on cloth diapering at Bloom! I was a great success. I learned a lot. We are now carrying GAD diapers at Bloom so in the process of getting the diapers on the website I had to do a lot of homework. I had no clue what pocket, AIO, etc…were. So it has been one week of cloth diapers in this household! Very exciting. But for some reason cloth diapers make me really apprehensive. Does anyone else get freaked out about it? I am constantly worried that the diapers are going to leak. I didn’t wash/dry them the right way. That they are uncomfortable on  the baby (crazy, especially if you have felt GAD diapers. The bamboo and microfleece linings are like butter. Almost makes you wish you had underwear as soft!!) I think the first problem was not enough diapers. I only bought five, just to see how it would go. Well, you can imagine how fast I was doing laundry. I have bumped up to 8 or 9 diapers now. It is enough but I am still doing laundry daily. I could use about 8-10 more pair just to save myself some work. I am getting used to the poop. Actually, it is getting much better. My 10m old is recovering from a double ear infection and we are now on antibiotics. I am thinking it wasn’t the best week to get started with cloth diapering, but you gotta start somewhere. I still have so much to learn. I would like to try some other brands out I think. I am digging the pocket diapers. What are your favorite cloth diapers?? It is hard getting used to that big fluffy butt. I am definitely going to size up in pants to accommodate for the extra fluff.

Bloom's selection of prefolds and pocket diapers ready for the class!

Bloom's selection of prefolds and pocket diapers ready for the class!

Last night Bloom held its first cloth diapering class and it was a huge success! We had lots of interested Moms with lots of great questions. Kim Webb of RockinGreenSoap.com lead the class and made us all fall in love with cloth diapering and especially GAD pocket diapers. I personally hope that I have bought my last box of disposable diapers! In fact the baby was sporting pre-folds this morning! I brought home the medium and large GAD diapers to fit her and she can wear both sizes. Now back to the store to pick out great colors and inserts, home for washing and we should be ready to rock the cloth diapers! Missed the class? No worries, give us a call and we can schedule a one-on-one with you!! Call us at 210-824-2727 or email me at allison@bloommaternity.net

Vaccines and Autism, is there a link?

The debate over vaccine safety rages on, with no clear end in sight.

The debate over vaccine safety rages on, with no clear end in sight.

Another great article about vaccines! It is important as parents that we have all of the facts. I don’t have a problem with vaccines, what I do worry about is the amount of vaccines and at such a young age. I’m all for spreading out the vaccine schedule, just my opinion. What are your thoughts??
